Commission calculation software for small teams: what to look for
Commission calculation software compared for a distributor or manufacturer with 5-50 reps: what QuotaPath and Xactly cost and do, and the simpler alternative.
For a distributor or manufacturer with 5 to 50 reps paid on paid invoices, the right commission calculation software is the one that matches your plans and your price range, and the well-known options are priced for larger sales teams. QuotaPath's public pricing starts at a $525 monthly platform fee, and Xactly is an enterprise product. A tool built for the monthly statement run is the lighter alternative. Here is how to compare them on your own terms.

What should commission calculation software do for a distributor?
It should do the monthly job from your data, not ask you to rebuild your sales process. For a back office paying reps on collected invoices, that means:
- Read an export of paid invoices and credits from your accounting system.
- Apply flat or tiered rates on sales or gross margin, with customer-specific rates.
- Split an invoice across reps and take commission back on credits.
- Give every rep a statement and give payroll a summary.
- Let you review and approve before anything goes out.
If a tool is built around features you do not use, you still pay for them, so check the price against the monthly job.
How much does QuotaPath cost?
QuotaPath's pricing page (checked 2026-10-14) lists a Growth plan at $35 per user per month plus a $525 monthly platform fee covering the first five users, billed annually, and a Premium plan with an $800 monthly platform fee. So the minimum is $525 a month. In a Capterra review (2025), a CEO of a 2-10 person company called the pricing page "misleading bordering on dishonest". QuotaPath is rated 4.5 from 123 reviews on Capterra. The question is whether a back office paying 8 reps from an invoice export needs a $525 monthly floor.
How does Xactly Incent compare?
Xactly Incent is rated 4.2 from 252 reviews on Capterra. The complaints on its first review page are about cost, implementation time and fees, a steep learning curve, and plans that are "very challenging to configurate and maintain" (Capterra, 2025). It is aimed at enterprises with complex plans and dedicated compensation staff. Small teams on a monthly invoice cycle will find it heavy.
Is there a lighter alternative for 5 to 50 reps?
Yes: Commission Run does one job. Each month you upload the paid-invoice export, it applies each rep's rate, tiers, splits and clawbacks, you approve the month, and each rep receives a statement link with a PDF while payroll gets a payout CSV. It works with any system that exports CSV or Excel (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, Acumatica, Epicor and others). It does not pay your reps, and it does not do quarterly or annual quotas, draws or product-category rates, so those are entered as adjustments. The price is a flat monthly amount on the home page, for up to 50 reps.
How do these options compare side by side?
| Question | QuotaPath | Xactly Incent | Commission Run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reviews on Capterra | 4.5 from 123 | 4.2 from 252 | New, none yet |
| Who reviewers say it suits | Small teams, with a pricing complaint | Enterprise, with setup and cost complaints | Back office running the monthly statements |
| Public starting price | $525 a month platform fee | Not checked here | Flat monthly price, see the home page |
| Input | Not checked here | Not checked here | A CSV or Excel export of paid invoices |

Check each vendor's own pages before you decide; plans and prices change.
What should you test before choosing?
Run last month's real export through whichever you shortlist, and compare the totals to your sheet. Pick three awkward cases: a split invoice, a credit against an earlier month, and a rep on tiers. If the tool gets those right and shows its working, it is probably right on the rest. Commission Run lets you do this without an account: the free run takes your own paid-invoice file and a rate per rep and returns the statements, PDFs and payout CSV.
What if I only need a spreadsheet?
Then a spreadsheet may be all you need. See the commission tracking spreadsheet comparison. To check the math by hand first, read how to calculate sales commission.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best commission software for a small business?
It depends on your plan. For an enterprise compensation team with complex plans, a larger product fits. For turning a paid-invoice export into monthly statements, a tool built for that run fits.
Does commission software connect to QuickBooks?
Some do. Commission Run does not connect directly; it reads a CSV or Excel export from QuickBooks or any other system.
Can software pay my reps?
Commission Run does not. It calculates what each rep is owed and gives payroll a summary; paying stays with you.
Every rep's commission statement from last month's paid invoices
Upload your paid-invoice export. Commission Run applies each rep's rate, tiers, splits and clawbacks, you approve, and each rep gets a statement while payroll gets a payout summary.
